Highfield Level 2 Award in Legionella Awareness (Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers)
This qualification consists of two parts:
- Legionella Awareness
- Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers
Within Legionella Awareness, we examine ‘Legionella Bacteria’, where they originate and what causes them to grow and multiply, and eventually becomes a health risk.
We take a closer look at the legislation referring to the risk from legionella and its control in the workplace. We examine two important HSE guides “Legionnaires’ disease. The control of legionella in water systems. Approved Code of Practice L8” and “Legionnaires’ disease: Technical guidance Part1: The control of legionella bacteria in evaporative cooling systems”.
We discuss different water systems, including cooling towers and evaporative condensers, how they function and how they should be operated in the correct manner, so the multiplication of legionella is under control and the workplace can operate safely.
Can legionella bacteria be passed from person to person?
If I drink water contaminated with legionella, can I get seriously ill?
If legionella bacteria are naturally present in rivers or lakes, why don’t they pose a serious risk to our health?
We will ask these and other questions that have logical explanations and depend on the characteristics of legionella bacteria. Once you’ve understood these characteristics, it will become clearer how to control the risk from legionella.
